Pizza Dough

Home made pizza dough is something I make so often, I don’t even need to measure the ingredients anymore. There are a lot of things I would buy ready made if I’m short on time, but pizza dough is never one of them! What’s better than knowing that you are personally responsible for the delicious aroma wafting through your house? Nothing.

Here’s what you’ll need:

1 cup warm water

1 tsp dry active yeast

1 tsp sugar

1 egg

2 Tblspn olive oil

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp dried oregano *optional

3 – 4 cups of flour

cornmeal for dusting

If you’re using a stand mixer add the ingredients in this order. First the water, then sprinkle in the yeast and sugar. Next, sprinkle over the flour (start with 3 cups and add more after if needed) so it completely covers the water. Then carefully break the egg in, drizzle over the olive oil and add the salt last. Turn the mixer on the lowest setting and let it mix until everything starts to come together. If the mixture is too liquid add flour by the Tblspns until the dough starts coming together. Then turn the speed on medium low and let the dough knead for 5-8 minutes, or till the dough looks smooth and isn’t sticking to the sides of the mixing bowl.

If you don’t have a stand mixer mix these ingredients in the same order in a large bowl and knead by hand for ten minutes or till the sough is smooth.

Cover the bowl and let the dough rise till it has doubled in size. That usually takes an hour or so. Once the dough has doubled, remove it onto a floured surface and pinch the sides of the dough towards the center to create a ball shape. Let the dough sit for a few minutes before rolling out.

This dough can be rolled out thinner but it’s not ideal for thin crusts pizza. If you wish to achieve a true thin crust omit the egg in the recipe and adjust the flour quantity accordingly. This dough is perfect for pan pizza. Once you roll it out, transfer to a baking tray, then top with sauce and a little cheese. Then sprinkle over toppings of your choice and add some more cheese.

I always sprinkle over some garlic powder and oregano before baking. Bake the pizza in a 400 F oven till the dough is cooked and the cheese has started turning golden brown.
